The Municipality of Eemsdelta is launching a pilot program with two charging light poles on Uitwierderweg in Delfzijl; a smart combination of public lighting and electric car charging. Charging light poles are street lamps with two integrated charging stations for electric cars.
This allows electric cars to be charged without the need for additional charging stations on the street. And by combining the two, CO2 emissions per location are reduced by over 58%. The Province of Groningen has provided a subsidy for this as part of the development of sustainable mobility.
On Wednesday, December 10, 2025, Alderman for Sustainability David De Jong launched the pilot program by connecting a municipal electric car to one of the charging stations. ” With this pilot program, we want to investigate whether we can implement these charging light poles in more locations in the municipality, ” says Alderman David De Jong. ” It’s a smart solution that aligns with our ambition to make Eemsdelta more sustainable and future-proof. “
Demand for electric car charging stations is growing, but street space is limited. Normally, each charging station requires a dedicated location, which requires additional excavation and costs. By combining streetlights and charging stations, the municipality can better accommodate this growing demand while simultaneously maintaining a more attractive streetscape.
Together with partners Park&Charge (Charge Point Operator) and CityCharge (hardware supplier), we are investigating how charging light poles can be implemented on a larger scale. Depending on the results, we will consider installing more of these poles in the municipality. A new location has already been found just outside the center of Delfzijl.
“With CityCharge, charging is effortless and worry-free. That’s how it should be.”
