Municipality of Haarlemmermeer

An innovative trial has begun in Haarlemmermeer with charging points in lampposts: a smart way to charge electric cars without the need for additional infrastructure in the street.

Where and how

In Sleutelbloemstraat (Quatrebras neighborhood, Badhoevedorp), three existing streetlights have been replaced with models with integrated charging points. Each lamppost offers two charging points.

Why this solution?

This solution saves space because charging stations are integrated into existing lampposts. Additional street furniture is therefore not necessary, which keeps the streetscape uncluttered. Charging also becomes easier for residents who don’t have their own driveway, without having to lay cables across the sidewalk. Moreover, this approach is flexible and can be applied to other locations with limited space, such as apartment buildings or sports fields.

Sustainability, use and management

The trial will last one year, allowing the municipality to monitor reliability, usage, and integration in the neighborhood. The Municipality of Haarlemmermeer is collaborating with Dutchcharge BV to manage the charging stations, while the municipality remains responsible for maintaining the lampposts.

Councillor Marja Ruigrok (Traffic & Transport) states:

With charging points in lampposts, we make it easy to charge close to home — without the need for additional charging stations in the street.

And councillor Marjolein Steffens-Van de Water (Physical Environment) adds:

By making smart use of existing light poles, we make sustainable charging accessible to more residents, while the public space remains attractive.

“With CityCharge, charging is effortless and worry-free. That’s how it should be.”
