Tilburg municipality opens first charging plaza

TILBURG, January 27, 2026 – The first charging plaza with CityChargeR charging stations officially opened in Tilburg today. Located adjacent to the new Reeshof Health Center, the plaza offers an innovative and sustainable charging solution for electric vehicles and is a first for the city.

Dual function and space saving

The CityChargeR charging poles combine public lighting with charging facilities for electric cars. Up to eight cars can charge simultaneously at four charging poles, at the same charging speed as a regular charging station. Thanks to their clever design, the charging stations blend seamlessly into the streetscape, without adding any extra objects to the public space.

Relief for the municipality

The charging plaza was made possible in part by Opcharge, which acts as Charge Point Operator (CPO). Founder Freddy van Nispen of Opcharge calls it a successful collaboration: “We invest in these locations ourselves and take care of everything for municipalities. This way, we make sustainable mobility feasible, affordable, and a good fit for the urban landscape.”

Sustainable and less grid load

Intelligent energy distribution efficiently distributes the available power across the charging stations. This not only helps combat grid congestion, but the combination of two functionalities in a single facility also significantly reduces CO₂ emissions. Material savings and a reduction of approximately 58% are achieved at each location.

Officially opened by the alderman

Alderman Bas van der Pol (Urban Development / Circular Economy) of the municipality of Tilburg officially opened the square: “It’s a wonderful innovation that combines circularity and sustainability in a technical solution that fits perfectly into the city’s public spaces. With this, the municipality of Tilburg is taking an important step towards a future-proof and smart city.”

Ambitions for the future

With this first CityChargeR location, Tilburg is underscoring its ambitions for sustainable mobility, circularity, and a livable public space. The municipality, together with its partners Opcharge and CityCharge, is exploring the possibilities of implementing this concept at more locations throughout the city.
